Raksha Bandhan

A thread tied on the wrist as a stated undertaking of protection — between siblings, and older than that reading.

The Shravana full moon also carries Upakarma, the day the sacred thread is renewed and Vedic study restarted — the older layer of the festival is about renewed obligation in general. The sibling reading has largely absorbed the rest, but the logic is the same: a tie is restated annually rather than assumed permanent.

• Anyone who wishes to honour — may observe it; there is no requirement of initiation or priesthood for the home version.
• Families often keep the fast together, while children, elders, pregnant or unwell people take a lighter form — fruit, milk, or simply the puja without fasting.

• ×Fixing the puja by the clock instead of the tithi. Purnima can begin or end part-way through the day in your city, so check your Panchang the evening before.
• ×Gathering samagri on the morning itself. Items such as rakhi — thread, silk or plain mauli and roli, akshata, a lamp on the aarti thali are often unavailable at the last minute.
• ×Breaking the fast heavily or at the wrong moment. Parana is meant to be gentle — water, fruit or prasad first — and is kept within the window your tradition follows.
• ×Taking one region's practice as the only correct one. In the south the same day is Avani Avittam, the annual renewal of the yajnopavita; in coastal Maharashtra and Gujarat, Narali Purnima, when coconuts are offered to the sea and the fishing season opens; in Odisha, Gamha Purnima.
• ×Rushing the steps without knowing why each one is done, which makes the observance hard to repeat next year.
