The goddess as daughter of the mountain. The nine days are opened by installing the kalash.
Puja
At the muhurta, spread clean soil in a clay pot, sow barley, place the copper kalash with water, mango leaves and a coconut on top, tie the red thread, and invoke Durga into the pot. Light the akhand jyoti if it is to be kept the full nine days.
Aarti
Jai Ambe Gauri, followed by the Shailaputri stuti — 'Vande vanchitalabhaya chandrardhakritashekharam'.

Why this, on this day
Everything begins from the ground: soil, seed, water, pot. The barley is sown before a single prayer is said so that the nine days can be seen growing rather than merely counted.
Today's Muhurta
Perform Ghatasthapana during the permitted Pratipada window, avoiding the locally listed prohibited period. Daily Devi puja follows the day’s tithi; Sandhi Puja belongs at the Ashtami–Navami junction. Vijayadashami is widely chosen for Vidyarambha, tools, study and constructive beginnings.
Good work: Begin disciplined study, prayer, music or a constructive project after the day’s Devi puja. On Vijayadashami, many traditions begin education, honour tools and undertake a purposeful journey.
Avoid: Do not install the kalash merely by a convenient clock time; confirm Pratipada and the prohibited interval locally. Avoid intoxication, cruelty and unnecessary conflict during the nine-day discipline.
