Ganesh Chaturthi

Ganesha is installed as a guest for a fixed number of days, and then given up — the immersion is the point, not the loss.

Ganesha is invoked at the start of anything, so his own festival is constructed around a complete arc: invite, host, release. The clay murti makes the impermanence physical, which is also why plaster-of-paris images break the logic as well as the water.

• Anyone who wishes to honour Ganesha may observe it; there is no requirement of initiation or priesthood for the home version.
• Families often keep the fast together, while children, elders, pregnant or unwell people take a lighter form — fruit, milk, or simply the puja without fasting.
• In many families the observance passes down through the women of the house or through a family tradition tied to Ganesha; follow your family's custom where it differs from the general description here.

A day fast until the midday puja is common; the festival days are otherwise feasting days.

• ×Fixing the puja by the clock instead of the tithi. Shukla Chaturthi can begin or end part-way through the day in your city, so check your Panchang the evening before.
• ×Gathering samagri on the morning itself. Items such as a clay (shadu) murti, not plaster and durva grass in bunches of twenty-one are often unavailable at the last minute.
• ×Breaking the fast heavily or at the wrong moment. Parana is meant to be gentle — water, fruit or prasad first — and is kept within the window your tradition follows.
• ×Taking one region's practice as the only correct one. Maharashtra keeps the public ten-day pandal form popularised in the 1890s; Goa keeps Chavath as a household festival with matoli; the Tamil and Kannada country keep Vinayaka Chaturthi largely in one day.
• ×Rushing the steps without knowing why each one is done, which makes the observance hard to repeat next year.
